Mastering the 1st Hour of Onboarding

Prepartion is everything. We, as thought leaders, are responsible for doing the hard work to ensure that we create the conditions in which the new starter can demonstrate their ability to do their best work.

For that to happen we require a safe and welcoming environment for them to feel settled and build their confidence. This is not the focus here but maybe it will feature in the future- here we are focusing on giving them the tools, or as we call them the dots, to be able to join together their version of reality. This needs to be as simple as it can be without being any simpler. It’s the joining of these dots and their associated meaning that will lead to wholesome and helpful conversation for that employee developing themselves in the role.


Given the focus is the employee in the context of the business our ‘dots’ are the key elements of the business in the form of symbols. Appearing simple it was when these are connected together by the new starter, immediatly on arrival, that they are beginning the practice of gaining a sense of themsleves in the context of the the organisation. An example being the Purpose of the business and another, as we see in the session the Measures that the business uses to define ‘good’.


When the team start talking, they have a chance to share what they really think, and so:

– They are more likely to be productive in their time with the company.

– The business will enjoy a ready supply of new opportunities each and every time you get to the truth- the challenge is working out what to do with them all! Boss Bill gets the most of her team and is able to translate that up to the board.

– Employees are likely to stay with the company for longer and that means avoiding the costs of rehiring- worse case 6-9 months of an the employee’s salary to locate and train a replacement and 2 years to become fully productive. Not to mention the toll on existing employee productivity and morale.
