Onboarding Resolutions & ROI

Published: 22nd January, 2021

In a fast-moving interactive session Andrea Moffat, YourBigPic Onboarding lead, facilitated a taster webinar through a simulation where the participants were invited to step into the shoes of individuals and roles in a fictional organisation. A two-paragraph introduction described the organisation and outlined its challenges.

Participants engaged with characters’ roles through pen-pictures (newly appointed, established staff members and internally promoted staff) initially sharing their experiences and feelings, and then used the BIGPICTURE® Board to frame a conversation around the challenges (personal/individual and organisational) and the opportunities.

We’re not a top down organisation, we want people to be in charge of their own objectives. It’s a really clear way that people talk about what I’ve achieved, this is what I’m going to achieve and giving them back the power to have that conversation in the context of the business needs. You’ve got a splendid view of the conversation!

The simulation enabled the participants to identify a number of issues for the fictional organisation, and opportunities that the use of the BIGPICTURE® board afforded the importance of onboarding in establishing staff in their roles, in relation to their and other organisational functions and post holders.

We demonstrated with the participants how the BIGPICTURE® board:

– Enables ‘difficult conversations’ around an otherwise ‘inanimate’ prop’ removing the sting but leaving the learning and the power;

– Unearths ‘useful truths’;

– Enables people to identify and own connections across the organisation;

– Spreads responsibility and accountability around the organisation through adult conversations;

– Brings forward in time the point at which new starters become active and activated, thus supporting the ROI; and

– Identifies opportunities to engage staff, and how the consequence of this is seen in the quality and depth of the subsequent performance conversations.

So let’s stop onboarding new recruits to our organisations in discrete groups; instead, let’s bring together new recruits, established staff members in role, and internally promoted staff to explore their roles through a conversation that has at the forefront the purpose of the organisation and the experience of the customer/client and the staff members.

You can learn more about what this means as a Return on Your Investment (ROI) here.

The ‘webinar’ word doesn’t really describe what it is we do with our time in sessions. We love a conversation where everyone has the chance to contribute.

Participants are provided with the means to make connections thus drawing attention to the conversation that is going on around.

It’s how we roll!

Please do ask us to help you achieve this same impact in your organisation. We can deliver this activity for you and at the same time upskill your team to take over the delivery. You can weave this into your Strategy-related activities which means you’re paying once for resources and deploying them many times across your organisation.

Find out more about our approach for Welcoming Colleagues. You can have a go yourself by printing and writing on the resource within the brochure you can download. The stuff we care about is all over our YouTube channel @YourBigPic. I would love to take you through a taster of BIG PICTURE® in a Webinar you can sign-up for here.
