“Hey Team, is your Tech working?”
With colleague’s work patterns changing, as well as the business, here is an engaging way to check in with them to find out what they think. So is YOUR Team’s Tech working?
With the wonderful BIG PICTURE® values, the instantly recognisable symbols and straightforward board we’re giving people something to make and do in quick time. By activating people in this way they are making and doing and at the same time sharing useful truths. You can develop a feel for the challenges around technology quickly in order you can flip into opportunities. You have to hope these opportunities are products and services you can offer now either as an internal provider or a supplier to your client. If not then appreciate the input and set clear expectations about what can be done when.
I was delighted to be joined by James Knowles and June Beddows from Digital Hollistics who are specialists in providing clients by looking at the overall business and as a result are able to achieve the right kinds of outcomes to achieve a Return on Investment (ROI). James shares a story in his introduction explaining where this focus derived from working with management to maximise benefits and reducing the putfalls. This is a great fit with BIG PICTURE®.
Maybe some organisations are reluctant to do this because they feel it could take too long or maybe even that it will result in new work to do and investment. Well we can help with the first by using a two-way collaborative conversation to quickly and with certainty focus down on the challenges facing colleagues right now. We demonstrated how we do this in the session for which you can watch highlights for below.
An observation is that we often reach a point in the road when we’re talking to a team is to either find out what their challenges are, that we can help with, or begin to tell the team what we’re good at. This is a good thing ..
No right or wrong. We are seeking useful truths that our colleagues are willing to share.
No over-dependency on one person. We are facilitating a two-way conversation.
No showing and telling. We are adding our value in making sense of what we find.
We are suggesting a three-stage approach which we would love to demonstrate for you:
Step 1. We ask colleagues to develop their own board initally using the red Team symbol to position themselves where they see themselves in the business. This first step can be kicked off using a Prompt Card that the colleague receives physcially within our Delegate Kit. We can spend more time here bringing in the other symbols to better describe their role and leading to the identification of a Challenge.
The identification of at least one Challenge here relating to Technology, two or three even better, is key as it will drive the second step to respond to it with our Digital Solutions offer; and
Step 2. Enrich the Challenge with connections to related symbols such as Team, Customer, Measure, Money and Process. This all adds to the story and background which becomes incredibly useful as an insight into the solution that will best meet the needs of the team. This could be either internally within an organisation or between a client and a supplier. Either way BIG PICTURE® provides the insights on which to base your proposals.
Step 3. To identify an area of interest to continue the conversation to appreciate the challenges people have and a pathway towards a solution. Once a challenge is understood then we move onto the next whilst building a picture of a solution in the form of an opportunity that is coherent overall whilst addressing the particular challenge area. You’ll see an example from our session around the way solutions are sourced and the way users are trained. Presenting this advice and guidance to the key stakeholders is key to mitigating this risk.
This third step is covered by Digital Holistics in their overall approach to delivering solutions . This demonstrates a schema to cover the total investment sink and an agreed plan for Return on Investment (ROI). The design and build proceeds with these open and transparent communications.
Whilst we’re focusing on the technical challenges of the team there is an incredible side-benefit. The benefits we, as a leader, have engaged with a cohort in a very short space of time whilst gathering a load of insights for the business. From the colleagues perspective they have been fully engaged and listened to. They have led the needs process and we have responded to that. We feel this is a more emptathetic approach to working with our colleagues.
